How to Program Punch-Throughs on a Universal Remote

programming punch-through on universal remotes

Punch-through programming allows a universal remote to control essential functions like volume, playback, or channel selection across multiple device modes without switching manually. This makes it easier to operate multiple devices seamlessly with fewer button presses.

This article explains the different types of punch-throughs, how they work, and the step-by-step process to program them for a more efficient remote control experience.

What is a Punch-Through?

A Punch-Through, also known as an Alias, is a feature in universal remotes that allows a specific function (like volume, channel control, or playback) to be used on one device while operating in another device mode. This means that even when the remote is set to control a streaming device, DVD player, or gaming console, certain buttons (e.g., volume control) will still adjust the TV or soundbar.

The Punch-Through feature is fundamentally used to bypass the currently selected device mode and control a different device. In short, it allows certain commands to “punch through” the currently selected device mode to control another device directly. This eliminates the need to switch modes to control basic functions frequently.

On some remotes like One For All and RCA, the feature is referred to as Volume Lock, Channel Lock, etc., depending on the function being assigned across multiple device modes. These terms indicate the same punch-through functionality, allowing users to control volume, channels, playback, or menu navigation on a designated device without switching modes manually.

How Does a Punch-Through Work?

A punch-through works by linking a specific function to a source device (e.g., TV for volume control) and allowing it to override controls in target device modes (e.g., streaming device mode). It ensures specific buttons always control the assigned device, even when using another.

What are the Different Types of Punch-Throughs?

Depending on the remote brand and model, the different types of punch-throughs that can be applied to different functions are given below.

  1. Volume Punch-Through: It controls volume on a specific device (e.g., TV) regardless of the active mode. It does not work if the device has its own volume/mute control (e.g., a satellite receiver) or if custom volume/mute data has been programmed.
  2. Channel Punch-Through: It allows the CH+, CH-, and LAST (Previous Channel) buttons to control the channel functions of the TV or Cable/Satellite box while in other device modes, such as VCR, DVD, or AUX. Channel Punch-Through does not apply if the device mode you’re in already has its own channel controls (e.g., a DVR with built-in tuners).
  3. Transport Key Punch-Through: It allows the transport keys such as PLAY, STOP, PAUSE, REW, FF, and REC buttons to control a designated playback device (such as a DVD, DVR, or VCR) while in other modes, like TV or CABLE. It does not work if the device mode has its own transport controls, such as a satellite receiver with a built-in DVR.

How to Program a Punch-Through

Following are the likely steps to program a Punch-Through on a universal remote.

Step 1: Check Compatibility

First, check if your device supports Punch-through programming. Refer to your remote’s user manual if in doubt. Additionally, identify which functions can be programmed for punch-throughs.

Step 2: Enter Punch-Through Programming Mode

Press and hold the Setup or Program or SET button on the remote until the LED turns on. Then, enter the Punch-Through programming code. Some remotes, like Inteset INT-422, need a punch-through programming code. So, check your remote’s user manual for the code.

Step 3: Select Function and Devices

Once you are in punch-through programming mode, press the source device mode where the key that has the desired IR signal to punch through (i.e., TV). Next, press the desired source button. If more than one punch-through key is desired, press those keys as well. Finally, press the target device mode button to program the punch-through key.

Step 4: Save and Test the Punch-Through

Save the settings and test by switching modes to see if it is working correctly.

Setting up punch-throughs on your multi-device remote makes controlling multiple devices much easier. Instead of constantly switching modes to adjust the volume or change channels, you can program your remote to keep key functions accessible no matter what device you’re using.

With just a few simple steps, you can customize your remote to fit your needs and enjoy a smoother, more convenient experience. Whether you’re watching TV, streaming your favorite show, or using a DVD player, punch-through programming ensures you stay in control without extra hassle.
